FAQ

Q. WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF THE FOUNDATION?

A. To research, promote, plan for, and assist in bringing expanded higher education (Shore U) to the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Initially, this would be achieved through collaboration between ESCC and a public university providing on- and off-site 3rd and 4th year classes. Optimally, a branch campus of an existing public university would be the most effective and efficient way of achieving this goal and would ease financial assistance and accreditation.

Q. WHY DO WE NEED A UNIVERSITY ON THE EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA?

A. For economic, social, cultural development, enhanced prestige, and accessibility for Shore families with no prior experience of Baccalaureate-level education.

Shore U’s students will bring an influx of new revenue to the Shore. Some will certainly stay here after graduation, become part of our community, work locally, raise families, and start businesses.

Q. HOW WILL THIS AFFECT OUR COMMUNITY COLLEGE (AND ITS WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT CENTER)?

A. We’ll still need it; it does good work.

ESCC provides strong technical and certificate programs. Transfer options from ESCC to Shore U would be possible.

Q. THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE IS ON A GROWTH PATH. HOW WOULD SHORE U HELP THIS EFFORT?

A. A four year degree program from this destination college would attract students from other counties, states, and countries.

Q. WHAT COURSES WOULD BE OFFERED?

A. Courses of particular importance to the Shore and Commonwealth especially in science, technology, engineering, math, education, and health.

Courses could be developed to meet the growing interest in climate, alternative energy and coastal resilience.

Q. HAS THIS BEEN DONE BEFORE?

A. Yes.

There are about twenty universities and colleges in small towns across Virginia. See more information here.

Q. HOW WILL WE ATTRACT STUDENTS AND FACULTY?

A. With the right courses and student services, and the unique attractions on the Shore. (“You’ll Love our Nature!”).

ESVA provides access to a chain of protected barrier islands that is unique in the world and supports advancing scientific studies ... including the ever more important science of resilience. The 65-mile long barrier island chain...is one of the nation's last remaining expanses of Atlantic Coastal Wilderness.
